Weekend in Mendocino

A couple years ago we went up to Mendocino (about 3 hours north and west of us) for the 4th of July weekend.  We had such a great time, we thought we’d do it again this year!

We stopped at Navarro vineyards on the way, and took some beautiful pictures.  Alex is loving his new “work” camera, and it is the reason for the incredible upgrade in our photos!

We got up to Medocino around dinner time.  The last time we went we took Milo, and there were a bunch of restaurants that we could sit on the patio and bring him with us.  Unfortunately we didn’t know that for many restaurants they had changed their policy.  So poor Milo spent more time in the car than we had hoped.

This is our hotel.  We had a great room with a huge bed, couch, and jacuzzi tub.  Both Ella and Milo enjoyed the jacuzzi tub!

The view of the bay.

Ella with her “packpack”

Not sure what she’s waiting for, but love this pic.

On the 4th we took our new and never used beach tent, and set up camp down by the ocean.  Mama enjoyed the shade, and Ella enjoyed the water!

We also had some great dinners.  And although we didn’t take pics of the food (I know only some of you are disappointed), we did take lots of pics of us and mostly E in and around our meals.

Ella enjoyed the bacci as well…

We had a great time.  Ella refers to Mendocino as “the country.”  Swimming, walking, eating… a wonderful relaxing weekend.

Holiday pictures

I finally found all the camera cables (everything disappears when you move!) and uploaded all the pictures off the camera. To my surprise, they went back before Thanksgiving. So, for those who want the more thorough tour, visit our Flickr site. Otherwise, here are the highlights:

Wayne joined us for our annual Thanksgiving party. He has come every year for the past 8 years. He and Ella had a ball playing in her toy chest.

DSC02774

This year we ordered a Heritage turkey from a local farm up in Point Reyes. We ordered before we had a confirmed headcount for dinner, and this happened to be a small year but a big bird. Somehow we decided since I was taking the day before Thanksgiving off, it would be a fun family outing to drive up to Point Reyes to pick up the turkey. But no one else could come with me — so I drove 4 hours round trip by myself. But the turkey was delicious, and well worth all the extra effort.

After the “Big Move” (and it was — so it deserves caps and quotes, believe me). We decided to do something Christmasy. We hadn’t decorated the old flat – because we were moving, and it didn’t make sense to decorate the new falat because we were traveling to SLC for the holiday. So one Saturday we decided to take the bus downtown, and hop on a cable car. Ella had never been on a cable car – despite living in San Francisco her whole life. I guess we don’t have many new visitors anymore… Anyway, she loved it. She was entranced with the break man, and could hardly peel her eyes from him to enjoy the amazing views.

Then we walked down to Union Square to check out the Christmas tree and the ice skating rink. Elle will have to wait another year or two to try skating, but she loves to watch the kids go by.

Before we left for SLC we had to open presents from Meme and Papa, since we wouldn’t be seeing them for Christmas. Ella was very excited, and opened all the presents — even those that weren’t for her.

The next morning we set out for our 12 hour drive to SLC. As soon as we got there, we had to pack it up and drive over to Ann and Lon’s house for the annual family party. They even had a Santa! Ella’s last experience a week or two before with a neighborhood Santa had not gone well, so we figured she would not be excited to see this one. We were so wrong. We kept having to pry her off his lap so another kid could have a turn.

After Santa, and a huge buffet dinner there was the annual nativity play. We haven’t been to SLC in about 7 years for Christmas, and had no idea how the production had evolved. Costumes were sewn – no more bring your own bathrobe! All the grandchildren were sheep. Yep… Elle was the only black sheep. Oh, but she loved it. She ran up to me, in costume and said “Mama! I’m a sheep! Baaaaaaa”

We had a wonderful time, but are glad to be back home, settling into our new house and enjoying the new year.

June

Things have been really busy around here. Work for both Alex and I was insane in June, and in the middle we had a 10 day vacation to visit family in New Hampshire. So here is a big blog post for our June adventures.

On June 9th we celebrated Family Day, the anniversary of Ella’s adoption. We went out for breakfast at Park Chow, then off to Point Reyes for a hike and picnic.

Her favorite thing now is to “help” in the kitchen. Lately that has meant also multitasking on the phone…

Our trip to NH began with our dropping Ella off at Meme and Papa’s house and jumping a train to NYC. We spent 4 days eating in the most fabulous restaurants, sleeping in, and wandering in the rain. It was great. And Ella had a wonderful time with the grandparents. Once we got back to NH we had another week just to spend with the family. We went to the NH Children’s Museum

Portland Trip

Last weekend we took a bit of time off work and flew up to Portland to spend Easter with Unkie Wayne. He was very gracious to open his home to our boisterous bunch. We had a lot of fun, doing the same kinds of things we do here at home… farmer’s market, playgrounds, bookstores, restaurants, and cooking. We didn’t take a ton of photos, I guess we were having too much fun to remember to take out the camera. But here are a few fun shots.

We found this great old school playground that still had all the toys they usually rip out and replace with lead-free, nonlethal new equipment. But Ella loved playing on it as much as we did!

Alex’s other favorite site in Portland – Stumptown Coffee. He can’t get enough. But Elle and I decided to share a hot chocolate. This one came with whipped cream, which she enjoyed more than the drink:

Sunday night Wayne, Alex and I pitched in (Ella was asleep, thankfully) and made an amazing Easter dinner. We had a hazelnut crusted pork loin with apple chutney, asparagus, Emily Bates’ mac and cheese, and a green salad with radishes and bleu cheese with Wayne’s secret dressing. I also made a strawberry rhubarb crisp for dessert, not pictured (although it should have been…). It was fabulous. Best food we had the whole trip.

And for those of you keeping track of Ella’s hair styles, Monday night (after we got home) I sat her in her high chair, and one dinner and two Yo Gabba’s later, we had this:

These two shots below are from today, so day 4 of the hair, doing it’s own thing. Dressed to kill in the dress from Grandma Debbi for Easter. Also, wearing her new shoes (I love shopping in Portland, no sales tax, and TONS of amazing shops. Dangerous).

Zoo Day

Saturday we took Ella to visit the Oakland Zoo. A few of my coworkers, and their daughters, met us with wagons to trek around.

Trip to Utah 09

Last week we took a few days off work and headed to see family in Utah. Alex had a bit of work to do there, so it was a good excuse to visit. The time flew by – but I don’t feel like we did anything! We did get to spend a lot of time with family, so it was well worth the time. Here are a bunch of pictures from the trip.

Ella and Gray are just the best of friends. These are pictures from Thursday right when Gray got to the house.

On Friday we visited with Alex’s grandparents.

We then took the trip up to Hooper (pronounced hu-pah) to see Heather’s Aunt Ann and Uncle Max.

On Saturday we took the kids to the Discovery Museum downtown. Ella had a great time. We have more videos of this, but I haven’t uploaded them yet….

I realize now that we didn’t take as many pictures as I thought we did. Maybe Grandma Debbi has more she can send to me. But to close, here’s a video of Gray and “La” playing with a box. The box that kept these two occupied for the entire weekend – seriously, why do we even buy toys?

Utah Trip 10/08

We traveled to Utah mid-October to see family, celebrate Ella’s birthday, and for a film screening for Paperback Dreams

The film screened on Thursday, October 23rd at the SLC library. It was well attended, thanks in part to our Heiner family, and SLC friends! Unfortunately, our dear one-year-old (still sounds strange!) did not have the patience to sit quietly and watch Daddy’s movie. But luckily (?) neither could Cousin Gray. So Spencer, Gray, Ella and I entertained one another in the lobby. Spencer is the best Uncle ever, and was a huge help with Elle, and I taught Gray how to hand out postcards once people left the theater. He called them his “monies.” And he’d give them out to anyone who walked by – and sometimes would demand their return!

The next day was “Hamburger Day.” On the 24th of October last year we met with A Angel Adoption to sign our adoption paperwork, in a Burger King. It was surreal to say the least. But we decided that ever after 10/24 would be Hamburger Day. (We couldn’t stomach the thought of it being BK day…). So we piled up Grandma, Grandpa, Uncle Spence, Cousin Gray, Mom, Dad and Ellie. We went to Five Guys Burgers and Fries. Ella and Gray had a blast, mostly sharing a Caffeine Free Diet Coke (nasty).

That night when we went home Spencer and Alex decided to carve pumpkins. I thought they were a little over ambitious, but boy was I surprised! They carved 4 pumpkins – one that looked like Ella, Gray, Milo, and Dash (the latter two are our respective pups). They were so awesome lit up!

On Saturday Chris and Amanda joined us. Ella took a real shine to Amanda. Super cute.

And we had her birthday party. It was great to see so many family members and friends. Too bad we didn’t take many pictures! But here’s the 2nd birthday cake. She was still a bit freaked out when we sang to her. Maybe it’ll go better next year…

All in all it was a great trip. We got to see family, Gray and Ella had a ball together, and it was great timing for a vacation.

One year in photos

I meant to have this done for Ella’s birthday, but somehow in the craziness, I didn’t get it done. But here it is, one year in pictures of our little Ella Michelle.

The Pit(t)s

Milo and I are holding down the fort alone this weekend while Heather and Ella visit our good friends Richy and Marie and Linus in Pittsburgh. Ella, when you’re old enough to read this, remember that Marie introduced your mom and dad. Anything about your parents that you don’t like? It’s her fault–she put us together.

Milo and I have been doing the usual weekend ritual: Farmer’s Market, burrito Saturday night, laundry and cooking on Sunday. (We made a tomato soup that may be worth cutting your trip short, Ellie–tell your mom!) It’s a little lonely here without them.

Meanwhile, the girls have been sending photo updates, and they’ve been paying homage to Mr. Rogers (who should have a religion based on him, although as a Methodist he’d probably disagree … still, this video is a nice benefit from the existence of You Tube). Anyway, Ella’s too young to watch his shows yet, but that didn’t stop mom from putting the Trolley before the horse, so to speak:

And they’ve also found time to enjoy some ice cream:

And play in the fountain:

Behind the puff, Elle is reported to be sporting a new do. Marie’s neighbor came over to teach Heather to do cornrows … hopefully we’ll get photo evidence soon. Have fun, girls, and come home soon!

Family Vacation

I am so very behind on my blogging!  So there may be a few posts today as I attempt to catch up.

We took the whole family (including Milo) to Mendocino for the 4th of July weekend. We had a blast. It was nice and warm, beautiful views, and amazing food.

This was SF when we left on Friday. Cold and foggy…

We went to a couple really nice dinners. We had to sit outside, as Milo was with us. And we’d get Ella in her highchair, set up her placemat and cover it with cheddar bunnies. We sure know how to class up a joint.
